What would give you confidence in the General Medical Council?

The Department of Health is currently holding a consultation on the future of medical regulation.

The GMC will be sending a formal response to the Department shortly. As part of the process of compiling our response, the GMC is engaging with all of its constituents (patients and the public, doctors, educators and trainers, and employers) to gather their views on how it should build on the many changes it has made in the past six years.

The President and Chief Executive of the GMC used these fringes to ask the audience, “What does the GMC need to do to command the support of its main constituents”?

One suggestion has been to look at its governance and constitution. For example would changing the composition of Council from having a majority of medical members to a balanced composition reflective of its main constituencies help?
